An Early Clue to the New Direction

From 1967, here's Brit Invasion faves The Zombies and a rather astounding live (non-lipsynched) cover of the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine" as performed on teevee in the land of the Ignoble Frog.

Viewing that, of course, there's really only rational response:

In conclusion, Rod Stewart -- bite me.

In any case, as is customary, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded to the first reader who divines the clip's relevance to Friday's Weekend Listomania.

Guitar players who look the most like Roy Orbison?

If you mean Chris White, the bass player with the glasses, no.

Although I've always thought he was the visual inspiration for Austin Powers. Either him or Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon, who had the teeth....

Greatest live TV performances?

I'll take best live covers for $1,000, Alec.

And, by the way, are those photos of Devo in the background?

I’m seriously afraid covetednoprizewinnerwithoakleafcluster may have done it again, in which case he’s soon going to have more medals than Leonid Brezhnev. And then I’m afraid that if he hasn’t done it, then the humanist has. And that if he hasn't done it, then steves ... But that’s a lot of fear! So OK, forward into the past: Best Interpretations of a song written by the Holland-Dozier-Holland Power Trio?

No, no, and no. Although all good guesses, and I think I'm gonna steal the live covers, the HDH thing, and the best live TV ideas down the line.

Thanks guys!

Ok, all the good guess are taken (and were wrong) so I'll dumb this down: Songs about internal organs? (And I don't mean Hammond B3's)

ROTP(lumber)

(If that wrong I have one more dumb one up my sleeve.)

Plumber:

In you're absolutely wrong, but in good conscience I have to give it to anyway, for a reason that will be obvious when the list goes up (just the other side of midnight, if anybody's still up).

Although now that I think of it, other than hearts, how many other internal orgrans have ever been referenced in pop songs? Is there a spleen song I've missed? An ode to the pineal gland?

Anyway, your coveted No-Prize is heading your way by carrier weasel as we speak...Congrats!!!!

Wow. I really need to do a little proofreading before I post. Does Blogger have a spellcheck I don't know about?

"When i touch you, do you quiver
From your head, down to your liver?"
'Do I Move You', Nina Simone.

By "astounding live (non-lipsynched) cover" do you really mean, "not bad for a bunch of opaque pimpled popsters"?

It isn't bad, and it's historical value is without question, but there really isn't much oomph to it, is there?

And Steve, if the theme is hearts, you need to get one "corazon" song in, just to piss off Lou Dobbs. Deal?

steve simels said...

Noam, we'll have to disagree about the oomph -- obviously, I think these guys were quite a bit more than opaque pimpled popsters (although that's a nice coinage -- kudos, and I'm sure I'm going to steal it).

But the Nina Simone liver thing is wonderful. Now if only we can find a song that references the Isles of Langerhan...

Maybe not in a song but the Firesign Theater refer to "the far flung Isles of Langerhan" in one of their early albums as I'm sure you remember.

I can't wait for my special weasel delivery!
