And Speaking of Possibly Ironic Cover Versions...

...as we were on the previous post, here's perhaps the ultimate medley record. From 1983, please enjoy sophomoric and/or sublime punk wiseacres The Circle Jerks and their classic "Golden Shower of Hits (Jerks on 45)."

I'm particularly fond of the "You're Having My Baby" segment, but I'm sure we all have our favorites.

The melodies ascend through the layers of contempt and shimmer on the surface of parody, unscathed and undiminished -- such is the power of a good tune. It takes more than a sneering reiteration to murder "You're Having My Baby", which will pop up, unperturbed, like the impossible-to-stifle Ethel Merman in "Airplane".

A fine way to start the week; thank you, steve!

Note to self: Vaguely juvenile parody singles by first generation punk pioneers less interesting to readers than hoped.

I heard a cover of Wham's "Careless Whisper" (Neve gonna dance again) by a metal band that sounded like Metallica over the weekend. It was awful.

I'm trying to remember the last time I heard "You're Having My Baby"... I'm failing! Thank God!

Dave Barry long ago drove the spike into the heart of "(You're) Having My Baby". See here http://www.cs.umd.edu/~gasarch/HUMOR/worstsongs.html before the copyright police arrive.

"Close to You" is hard to beat for me.

Was Zander Schloss still with the jerks when they released this?
His work with Joe Strummer is immortal.
I still can't decide whether this song is merely creepy, foetid, a uniquely American classic, or all three:

I've actually had this in the rotation on my ipod for a few weeks now, in large part for the "You're having my baby" segment. Go figure.
