Image of the Day: I Don't Need No Doctor

And speaking as we were last week of the great Patti Smith -- a certain Shady Dame and I have been binge-watching The Killing, the extremely grim forensic crime series based on, apparently, an even grimmer Danish original.

And in episode one of the final fourth season -- what to our wondering eyes should appear the other day but said Patti Smith as...an emergency room surgeon(?!).

It was barely one step above a cameo, but Patti was nevertheless a total natural; I'm surprised she hasn't done more acting. In any case, Patti and the divine Joan Allen in the same episode -- it doesn't get any better than that.

The series, of course, is on Netflix, and I recommend it (with reservations). The Danish original -- charmingly monikered Forbrydelsen (which apparently translates as Wolf Who Stands in Grape Juice) is available on DVD over at Amazon, but only on European format discs.

Okay, I made up that bit about the title translation.

Steve,
1) I also remember seeing Patti in a small role in one of the LAW & ORDER series in recent years. I did a little research and here's the exact info: she was in an episode of LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT entitled "ICARUS" and it originally aired on June 19, 2011. (Thank you, IMDB.) In it, she played a professor. I think the episode would be from the last season the show ran.
2) Re: Patti's role in THE KILLING- If she gave you a medicated lotion, would it soothe your emotion?

I watched two seasons on Netflix, and found them fascinating, but ultimately the conclusions were so implausible they wrecked the series for me.

Seasons three and four are much, much better.

The spouse and I watched seasons 1 - 3 first run on AMC. First season started promisingly but devolved quickly; 2nd worse. Third had its moments but we felt it ended very badly. Haven't worked up the gumption to hit Netflix yet...

But what really chaps my ass about "The Killing" is that AMC canceled a truly marvelous show, "Rubicon", to pursue "The Killing". You should definitely check out the single season on "Rubicon"; a taut, suspenseful thriller in the vein of those classic '70s paranoid movies like "The Parallax View" or "The Conversation".

Watched Rubicon. It was okay, but for my money it didn't really go anywhere.

The final season of The Killing is taut, well-written, and ultimately very satisfying.
